The word "dendrochronology" is made up of the three Greek words déndron (= tree), chronos (= time) and logos (= science). In this way dendrochronology is the "science of the (life)time of trees" and deals with the analysis of tree rings.

Dendrochronology is used

  1. for dating wooden material of geological, archaeological, and historical context to its exact years of life and
  2. for reconstruction of earlier environmental conditions (e.g. climate) in time and space.
The results are of interest to cultural sciences as well as to natural sciences.

A more detailled description of the basics and methods of dendrochronology is given on the page working fields - dendrochronology.

We work at the Institute for Wood Biology and Wood Protection (section Wood Formation) of the German Federal Research Centre for Forestry and Forest Products (BFH) and at the same time at the Department of Wood Science of the University of Hamburg, which are linked by a contract-based agreement.
