Greetings from the President Greetings to all IRG Members and Sponsors and a happy May Day! READ LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dr Sandy McQuire, one time member of IRG and a former Director of the Forest Products Division at FRI, passed away on 8 April 2005, aged 79. Sandy joined the New Zealand Forest Service in 1949 as a Professional Trainee. He went on to complete a BSc in Botany at Auckland University, a BFor at Edinburgh and then, in 1970, a PhD at Leeds University, where he was sponsored by Hicksons. As a researcher, Sandy's main contribution was the development of timber treatment processes and he championed the establishment of graveyard and service tests. He was well known in wood preservation circles around the world, particularly in the UK and USA. A quote in the book "Characters of FRI" from Dr Colin Basset (former FRI Director of Research): "Sandy was an excellent scientist, a top academic, and a hard and productive worker. One of his strengths was his ability to interact effectively with all kinds of people in industry, from top to bottom, and interpret scientific knowledge in a user-friendly way - crucial for an Institute directly serving an industry." Sandy was also famous for his enthusiastic participation in a number of extra-curricular activities - he played for several FRI sports teams including basketball, cricket, rugby and golf and was well known for challenging his colleagues, particularly in the wee small hours at BWPDA meetings, to "NZ West Coast" bar games, expertise at which required the consumption of immoderate amounts of alcohol! In New Zealand parlance: "He was a good keen man!" Business News Timber firms on cartel counts Four timber companies and seven executives are to defend themselves in the High Court after the Commerce Commission laid civil proceedings alleging cartel behaviour. The proceedings are for the alleged sharing of prices, price-fixing, collusion and bid-rigging during a four-year period from 1998. READ INFORMATION Biological laboratory in Switzerland For a new laboratory in Switzerland we are currently working hard to find a Biologist that specialises in Materials Protection. Particular experience in wood is most beneficial. It is an excellent opportunity for a specialist capable of leading global projects in Materials Protection and who can manage a small local team to conduct the essential experiments. For a full detailed specification please contact Matthew Worby. Training in timber treatment wanted If your institute/university in any country can offer postgraduate diploma training courses in timber treatment aspects, please respond to Andrew T.
